Lambrusco Sour

A Lambrusco sour is a riff on a whiskey sour. With the addition of Lambrusco wine.
The Lambrusco Sour is a vibrant cocktail that blends the rich fruitiness of sparkling red wine with the bright, balanced flavor of a classic sour. As a result, the drink offers a beautiful contrast of flavors—deep berry notes from Lambrusco paired with fresh citrus and a hint of sweetness. The result is a cocktail that feels refreshing, slightly sophisticated, and perfect for both casual gatherings and special occasions.
In particular, known for its lively bubbles and juicy berry flavors, Lambrusco brings notes of blackberry, cherry, and plum to the drink. Its natural acidity and effervescence add brightness and lift, making it an ideal base for a cocktail that is both refreshing and complex.
Fresh lemon juice provides the signature sour element. The citrus cuts through the fruitiness of the wine and balances the sweetness, creating a crisp and lively flavor profile. A touch of simple syrup or another sweetener smooths out the tartness. Allowing the wine’s natural fruit character to shine without overpowering the drink.
Some versions of the Lambrusco Sour include egg white, which adds a silky texture and a light foam. When shaken well with the other ingredients, the egg white creates a smooth, velvety mouthfeel that elevates the drink. This technique is commonly used in classic sour cocktails to create a soft, balanced texture.
The Lambrusco Sour is typically served in a glass, where its deep ruby color becomes part of the presentation. A garnish such as a lemon twist or fresh berries enhances both the aroma and visual appeal of the drink.
Bright, slightly fizzy, and beautifully balanced, the Lambrusco Sour offers a creative way to enjoy sparkling red wine. It’s a drink that feels modern and timeless, bringing together classic cocktail technique with the lively character of Italian wine.
