Applesauce Cake is a delightful and moist dessert that has been loved by generations. The original recipe calls for simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, applesauce, spices, and a touch of oil or butter.

Ingredients
  

CAKE

  • 2 1/2 Cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 Tsp Baking powder
  • 1 Tsp Baking soda
  • 2 Tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Ground ginger
  • 1/2 Tsp Ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 Tsp Ground cloves
  • 2 Cups Applesauce
  • 16 Tbsp Butter-melted and cooled
  • 1 Cup Brown sugar-packed
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Tbsp Vanilla

ICING

  • 1 Cup Brown sugar-packed
  • 6 Tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Heavy cream
  • 1/2 Tsp Table salt
  • 3/4 Cup Powdered sugar-sifted
  • 1 Cup Pecans-toasted

Instructions
 

CAKE

  • Preheat oven to 350' and place the oven rack in the middle portion. Spray a 9X13 baking pan with cooking spray.
  • Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger, nutmeg and cloves in a medium bowl. Whisk applesauce, butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla together in a large bowl. Add flour mixture to applesauce mixture and stir to just combined.
  • Transfer batter to 9X13 pan and smooth top. Bake until top is golden brown and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 35 minutes.Rotate pan halfway through baking.
  • Cool on a wire rack completely, 2 hours.

ICING

  • Combine brown sugar, butter, cream and salt in a medium pan. Cook over medium heat. Whisking often, until large bubbles burst on the surface, 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.
  • Whisk in powered sugar and vanilla until smooth, about 1 minute.
  • Working quick spread icing over cake. Sprinkle pecans over icing. Serve
  • Store leftovers covered by plastic wrap for up to 3 days.
