Chefs Salad

The chefs salad is a culinary triumph that has stood the test of time. Its medley of flavors, textures, and nutritional value make it a beloved dish among food enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed as a classic or with modern variations, the chef’s salad remains a testament to the artistry and creativity of the culinary world.
There’s something timeless and satisfying about a classic Chef’s Salad. It’s hearty, colorful, protein-packed, and feels just as appropriate for a light dinner as it does for a ladies’ lunch or weekend brunch. This is not your average side salad — it’s a full meal layered with crisp greens, savory meats, creamy cheese, and perfectly cooked eggs.
Traditionally, a chef’s salad features sliced turkey and ham, hard-boiled eggs, cheese, tomatoes, and fresh lettuce. It’s the kind of dish that feels a little retro in the best way — simple ingredients, beautifully arranged, and completely satisfying. I love making this when I have leftover roasted turkey or deli meat that needs to be used up. It’s also perfect for meal prep because you can assemble everything ahead of time and just add dressing before serving.
Ingredients
- 6 cups chopped romaine lettuce (or a mix of romaine and iceberg)
- 1 cup sliced roasted turkey
- 1 cup sliced ham
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup shredded Swiss or cheddar cheese
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ½ cup sliced cucumber
- ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
- Fresh cracked pepper
For the Dressing (Classic Creamy Dijon):
- ⅓ cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
- 1–2 tablespoons milk (to thin)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Start by preparing your hard-boiled eggs. Once cooled and peeled, slice them evenly. On a large serving platter or in a wide bowl, spread the chopped lettuce as your base. Arrange the turkey, ham, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion in neat rows or sections across the top. This layered presentation gives it that classic steakhouse feel.
In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, vinegar, and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over the salad just before serving or serve on the side so everyone can add their own.
The beauty of a chef’s salad is how customizable it is. Swap in grilled chicken, add avocado, toss in crispy bacon, or change up the cheese. It’s fresh, filling, and proof that a salad can absolutely be the main event.
