Homemade Sour Mix
Homemade sour mix means that having this in my fridge is the start to some delicious cocktails. Add your favorite spirit and shake up something tasty in minutes.
Start making your homemade sour mix by sanitizing a quart mason jar. Wash and scrub all the citrus really good before zesting.
Then zest the grapefruit, limes and 3 lemons, using a vegetable peeler. Leaving the pith or white part when zesting because the pith can be bitter.
Combine the zest, sugar, salt and water in a small saucepan and simmer until sugar is dissolved, about 4 minutes. Place saucepan in a large bowl of ice to cool, stirring occasionally.
Squeeze the lemons to yield one cup using the zested lemons first. When you zest citrus, they will get hard on the outside and dry out. You will need 1/2 cup of grapefruit juice and 1/2 cup lime juice. There will be leftover grapefruit juice but save it to make my delicious Grapefruit Cosmopolitan. Strain the juices through a fine sieve into a medium bowl.
Strain the syrup through a fine sieve into the bowl with the juices. Pressing the zest to extract as much syrup as possible. Discard the zest. Stir well and store in a quart mason jar in the fridge.
