Simple Syrup
I always saw the simple syrup in the liquor aisle at the store. I always assumed that is something you just bought. I quickly realized when I started my cocktail journey that making simple syrup is one of the easiest things to do. I assumed it had magical powers boy did I feel silly when I learned that it’s just sugar water.
Simple syrup is an essential component of making cocktails. It is easy to make, and you can check out my video below if you need a tutorial. I’ve made simple syrups with sugar or honey. After seeing how easy it is, you will only go to the store to buy your favorite tequila. Then you will want to infuse herbs and spices in your simple syrups.
The ratio is 1:1 to make a simple syrup. I’ve used both granulated and superfine sugar to make simple syrup. I explain more about that in the video posted below. The hardest part of the recipe is measuring. Just use a liquid measuring cup for the water and a dry measuring cup for the sugar.
You can heat the water first but, it’s not necessary. It will just take longer for the water to boil if you add the sugar and water together. After the sugar dissolves, let it cool, and then keep it in the refrigerator. I store mine in a mason jar, and it keeps for about 3 weeks.
Simple syrup is not just for cocktails. You can use it to flavor your coffee or tea. Infused simple syrups are great as gifts.
